Different types of proxies and their uses

Before using proxies, you should have a good idea about how these proxies will help you make anonymous and protect your privacy. Otherwise, you might just end up exposing your ip or private information to websites you do not intend to. So, let's have a look at the different types of proxies and their uses.

  • Web based Proxies – These are just like normal websites but are capable of forwarding your requests to another web server. These proxy sites can be used for surfing other websites only. Your ip will not be disclosed but you won't be able to send your requests from other desktop applications through these servers.
  • Http Proxies – These are proxy servers which can forward your http requests through common http ports 80, 8080, 8000, 3128. Although these proxies can process any http request coming from your desktop, they cannot however forward non-http requests. You will want to use anonymous proxies to help ensure your IP address is not being forwarded through the proxy you are trying to use.
  • Socks 4/5 Proxies – These are Proxies that support Http and other connection types. 1080 is the common port. With this type of proxy server, you can use a messenger program or IRC through it. Socks 4 is the older of the two and has certain limitations. Socks 5 supports everything and is the new version as you could probably tell.

While using these proxies, be careful enough to test out any one of the proxy type to confirm that your ip and other information are not exposed.
